Wind power can be used to produce electricity at your home or workplace. Windmills, or turbines, are turned by the wind creating an electrical current.
- The turbines come in many different sizes, able to produce different amounts of electricity. Small turbines can be mounted on your house, but it is better to install a turbine of any size on its own mast, away from any buildings.
- How much wind is consistently received at your property is very important - this should be estimated or measured before installation is considered. This can also be affected significantly by any upwind trees or buildings, that can 'shade' a turbine. In a build-up area turbulence can also restrict how much electricity is produced.
- Small wind turbines are often used to charge batteries on boats, caravans or at properties where a mains electricity connection is not available. Where a 'grid' connection is in place, batteries are not required, and any surplus electricity can be sold back to an energy supplier. However, in most circumstances a turbine will help to reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy.
